We read a really fun book about all of the letters in the alphabet racing up the coconut tree. We talked about how letters make up words when you put them together and how they make up our names too. We counted how many letters are in our names. We also made a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Coconut tree to take home. The tree was filled with letters and the students had to place the correct sticker on each letter. They really enjoyed doing this activity. Then we decorated the border to make it look just like the book. We learned a new song about all of the letters and the sounds they make. We will start our alphabet adventure on Wednesday! Harley brought yummy snacks to share and we watched the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom video too.
Have I mentioned how much I love the extra time I get to spend with your children??!! We played a really fun counting game. We took turns rolling a die and placing coconuts (pom poms!) on our coconut tree. We practiced writing our numbers and worked in groups today too!
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Say it again!! That is what I heard all day long!! Jansen sounded like he was a rapper!! It was so funny! The kids loved LOVED this book. It is always a favorite every year. I like to read this to kick off the start of our Alphabet Adventure where we learn a letter and sound a week. I realize that several students know most of their letters and sounds from last year but review is always good and I try my best to keep it challenging by adding sight words, as well as reading and math activities. Today the students had fun making their very own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom coconut tree with the letters of their names. We had fun counting how many letters were in different names. We also made an alphabet book where the students traced all of the capital letters. I gave them a Coconut Tree pointer for being a Busy Bee today. They love using my teacher pointers to find letters around the room so I thought this would be great to get them to read more at home. Have them use their pointer when they read books to you. Then you can ask them to point to a particular letter or even a sight word we have been working on.
Kendall helped make our day even more fun by bringing Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees to eat! They were super cute celery stalks with peanut butter and cheez it alphabet crackers climbing the tree just like the story!! The trees even had coconuts growing on them!! (blueberries....how clever!) We watched the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom video while we had our snacks. I thought the kids might like to watch it again so I put a link below.
Finally, we reviewed our sight words and sang our red song before being dismissed. It was a great learning day. I hope everyone has a fun weekend! See you on Monday! :)
Today we read an all time Alphabet favorite. . . . Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!! The kids just giggle every time they say those silly words! We talked about how every letter makes a sound and groups of letters make words and that's how you learn to read. We made a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Alphabet Book today. The students had to trace their alphabet. Even if your child can write letters independently tracing is still an important fine motor activity for all to do. They earned a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom pointer for their Busy Bee Treat today if they stayed on green or yellow all week. They think it is fun to use a pointer to read or search for letters. Have them read their book to you. We also made a big coconut tree art project but we didn't get it completed. Monday we must finish up two of our projects so we can get them sent home!! Sometimes I plan a little too much to squeeze into one day!! We definitely keep busy that's for sure!! Jase brought coconut trees for us to eat at snack time!! OK... ... ...they weren't real coconut trees but they were super cute! They were celery with peanut butter and alphabet crackers were climbing the tree just like in the story!! There were coconuts (red grapes) on the trees too. Thanks for all of the fun snacks parents!! The kids can't wait to see what we are having next!! (oh . . . and me too!!) Have a great weekend! I am going to try to catch up on some cleaning!!
